Three Missing Cadres of the Opposition MDC Found Beaten, Humiliated outside Harare
The three missing youth leaders of Zimbabwe’s main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) have been found badly bruised and traumatized with horrific tales which include being forced to eat human excreta.
The women: Joana Mamombe, Member of Parliament representing the Harare West Constituency, Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri were found nearly 100km from the capital city Harare in the early hours of Friday May 15 at Muchapondwa shops in Musana, Bindura South.
The women went missing after being arrested following a demonstration in the capital city, Harare but mysteriously vanished from the police station with authorities denying ever seeing them.
According to the MDC-A Deputy National Spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka, the women were in awfully bad shape and told of horrendous tales of torture and abuse.
"Honorable Mamombe and Netsai Marova are having difficulty in walking while Cecilia Chimbiri is complaining of severe head pains,” he said, adding that they have since been checked into a medical facility in the presence of lawyers and the police.
Narrating the details, Tamborinyoka said they received a distress phone call from the dumped cadres who had been accommodated by a sympathetic villager in Muchapondwa.
"A group of MDC officials that included the Secretary for Welfare Maureen Kademaunga and deputy Organizing Secretary Hon. Happymore Chidziva immediately alerted lawyers and the police and drove to the area in Bindura South where they found the three cadres in very bad shape with torn clothes,” he said.
According to the party's rescue team that drove to Bindura with lawyers and the police, the three ladies said they were first taken to Harare Central Police station after being "arrested."
They were later taken from the police station and driven away in a black Toyota Wish vehicle. The men who drove them away covered the ladies' faces with what looked like sacks. They remembered being taken to a forest and being put in a pit where they were brutally assaulted.
"They told of horrific stories of abuse and humiliation that include being forced to eat human excreta," Tamborinyoka said.
Joanna Mamombe, Seriously Tortured being taken into Emergency Medical Attention
The US Embassy in Harare described the abduction and torture of the three MDC Zimbabwe officials as “abhorrent".
"We urge authorities to fully investigate and bring the perpetrators to account.," they tweeted.
The European Union Office in Zimbabwe office said they were relieved but concerned at the reports of injuries.
"In line with Zimbabwe’s own law - there should be a full investigation. Those responsible for any human rights violations should be held to account,” the EU statement read..
