AfDB Election Victory: Congratulation Messages Pour in For Adesina From Nigeria
Hours after Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina was declared unopposed winner of the second term reelection as President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), congratulatory messages have been pouring in from his home country, Nigeria.
Timescape Magazine reports that the election result, which gave the former Nigerian Minister of Agriculture a hundred percent of votes of all regional and non-regional members of the Bank, was announced by the Chairperson of the Board of Governors of the Bank, Mrs. Niale Kaba, Minister of National Planning of Côte d’Ivoire.
The election took place Thursday August 27, the final day of the 2020 Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank Group, which was held virtually for the first time in the Bank’s history.
Via a tweet through his verified Tweeter handle, @Mbuhari, Nigerian President, Muhammadu Bihari says Adesina's second term is well deserved, adding that the reelection will give the globally renowned development economist and a World Food Prize Laureate and Sunhak Peace Prize Laureate the opportunity to accomplish his lofty vision for the AfDB.
President Buhari tweeted Thursday afternoon, "I congratulate @akin_adesina on his re-election for a second term in office as President of the @AfDB_Group.
“It is a well-deserved victory. I have no doubt that in this second term Dr. Adesina will accomplish even more of his lofty vision for the Bank.
“I thank the African Union for its early endorsement of Dr. Adesina, and also thank the shareholders of the Bank who worked tirelessly for his re-election victory.
“I pray that the Almighty God will continue to strengthen him and his team to deliver even greater development to the African continent."
Former Nigerian Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in her congratulatory tweet said she was happy when the news broke out that her compatriot, Adesina hds been given another five years term at the AfDB.
"Wonderful to get the news of the re-election of @akin_adesina as President of @AfDB_Group. Hearty congratulations to you, my brother, and to Grace! Wishing you five more fruitful years!!”.
Governor of the State where Adesina hails from in Nigeria, Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun believes the reelection of his kinsman as the helmsman of the AfDB will bring greater development to Africa.
The Governor said: "On behalf of the good people of Ogun State, I congratulate Dr Akinwunmi Adesina on his re-election as President of the African Development Bank.
"It is not surprising, and it is indeed a blessing to our great nation, Nigeria to have retained leadership of the regional institution, when one considers the many developmental contributions by the Bank to Member Countries.
"I wish him a successful new term that will steadily continue to take the African region to greater heights".
