Ni John Fru Ndi, longtime leader of one of Cameroon’s most influential opposition parties has died aged over 80. Family sources informed Timescape Magazine that Mr. Fru Ndi died Monday, June 12, 2023, after a protracted illness.
Prior to his death, Mr. Fru Ndi was preparing to host a convention at which a new executive organ would be elected, seeing him step down as Chairman of the Social Democratic Front (SDF). Chaos within the party held things back right to the point the founding leader of the SDF did not live to hand over power.
Mr. Fru Ndi is reported to have won the 1992 presidential election in Cameroon before being robbed of his victory by incumbent dictator, Paul Biya and his ruling CPDM Party. He reigned as the main opposition leader in the country with stronghold in the former UN Trust Territory of British Southern Cameroons. His fortunes dwindled with the outbreak of the Southern Cameroons struggle for self-determination which resulted to a bloody armed conflict with the military of the Republic of Cameroon.
This is a developing story.
