All Five African plenipotentiaries to the Qatar FIFA World Cup tournament have been picked into what football pundits consider tough pools likely to generate a lot of fireworks.
Cameroon will face Brazil in the Qatar World cup in what may be considered as one of the toughest fixtures for the five-time African champions.
The Indomitable Lions will also play against Switzerland and Serbia-the result of the World Cup Draw that took place in Doha, Qatar, on April 1.
Brazil-the only team that has participated in every edition of the World Cup, has won the competition a record five times and is currently placed 1st on the FIFA Classification table.
Cameroon will be participating for the 8th time, the most impressive coming in 1990 when they became the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
The team put up horrible shows in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup tourneys when they crashed out in the group stages in both competitions, scoring a total of just three goals, but losing all their matches.
But Cameroon goes to Qatar on a high pitch, having qualified after a dramatic last-minute winner against one of Africa’s highly-rated sides, Algeria.
The Desert Foxes had defeated the Indomitable Lions in Japoma in the first-leg play-off, with former Captain, Rigobert Song commanding from the touchline as the new coach. The Algerians then went into the lead back home, only for Eric Maxim Tchoupo-Moting to reduce the tally, before Karl Toko Ekambi pulled a dramatic equalizer for the Central Africans at close range, giving Cameroon the ticket to Qatar on the away-goal rule.
While Brazil will be the side to beat, football commentators in Cameroon feel Switzerland and Serbia are within range.
But fans across Africa will not only be looking up to Cameroon.
Africa’s current champions, Senegal, find themselves in what looks like a relatively easy group A, having to face hosts Qatar, Ecuador, and the Netherlands.
Tunisia will play in Group D against France, Denmark, and either Austria, United Arab Emirates, or Peru who will battle it out in the intercontinental playoffs.
The Desert Warriors of Morocco have been pitted in Group F against Belgium, Canada, and Croatia, while Ghana will confront Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea in Group H.
A total of 32 teams will be competing for the top prize of the quadrennial international men’s football championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA.
This year’s event will take place in Qatar from November 21 to December 18, 2022.
